Zone Two Training and Mitochondrial Density
Low-intensity aerobic volume remains one of the most reliable levers for metabolic health. How to find your zone without a lab test.

What is zone 2?
Zone 2 training is low-intensity aerobic exercise performed at a pace where lactate stays near resting levels — usually below 2 mmol/L. It is conversational: you can speak in full sentences but your breathing is slightly elevated. For most people, this falls around 60–70% of maximum heart rate, though individual variation is wide.
The goal is not intensity; it is volume. Zone 2 sessions are typically 30–90 minutes, repeated several times per week. This low-stimulus, high-frequency approach builds mitochondrial density and fat oxidation capacity without accumulating fatigue.
Why it matters for metabolic health
Mitochondria are the cell's energy factories. With age and inactivity, mitochondrial function declines, contributing to insulin resistance and reduced fat oxidation. Zone 2 training specifically stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and improves the muscle's ability to use fat as fuel.
Studies in endurance athletes and in adults with metabolic syndrome both show that consistent zone 2 volume improves markers of metabolic flexibility, including glucose disposal and lipid oxidation, independent of weight loss.
Finding your zone without a lab
The simplest field test is the talk test: exercise at the fastest pace at which you can still hold a conversation without gasping. Nasal breathing-only exercise is another practical ceiling. Heart rate monitors help, but perceived effort and breathing are often enough.
Aim for 2–4 sessions per week, building duration before intensity. Zone 2 pairs well with one or two weekly strength sessions and occasional higher-intensity intervals. For most people, the biggest mistake is going too hard, too often.
